Building and Zoning Permits
Olmsted County Planning Department administers the building permitting process and inspections for projects taking place within the City of Eyota. Building permit/code/inspection questions for projects within the City of Eyota can be directed to the Olmsted County Planning Department at (507) 328-7100. Septic permits and inquiries can also be directed to the Olmsted County Planning Department at (507) 328-7100.
Zoning inquiries can be directed to the Eyota City Hall at (507) 545-2135.

The following permits are processed directly at City Hall:
- Chicken coop - $50
- Demolition Permit - $150
- Fence - $35
- Pergola - $50
- Shed under 200 sq. ft. - $50
- Swimming pools: less than 24 in. deep and under 5,000 gallons - $45

Building Permit Process for Olmsted County Permits listed above:
1. Building permit applications can be completed online from the links above (or stop into City Hall for assistance)
- If the property owner is doing the work/signed the permit submit a property owner waiver form
- Contractors must supply license number
2. For online building permits with Olmsted County - you can create an account on the citizen portal
- You will be able to check permit status from the portal
3. Pay fee online
4. Homeowner is contacted when the permit is processed

Basic Zoning Requirements:
25 feet: Minimum distance from front and rear yard property lines, from foundation of primary structure. On corner lots this is measured from property lines along two street sides.
7.5 feet: Minimum distance from primary structure foundation to side yard property lines. On corner lots this measured from the two property lines not adjacent to streets.
5 feet: Accessory structure minimum distance from rear and side yard lines. Distance is counted from eaves line.
50 percent: Maximum lot coverage of structures on lot. Note: actual lot does not include right of way, boulevards.
10 percent: Maximum total square footage of accessory buildings.
Fences: May be placed on lot line if owner is able to maintain both sides but not in an easement. No farm materials allowed. Permit is required.
Decks: If attached to primary structure, need to be included in lot coverage rules & abide by setback regulations for primary structures.
